Hey everybody! I promised a Q&A a few months ago for my birthday and I hadn’t gotten around to it yet, but I figured, no time better than Blogmas! If you’re interested in getting to know the girl behind the blog a little bit more, then read on!
(P.S. thanks to everyone who sent these questions in—sorry I couldn’t get to them all!)
1. What did you get for your birthday? (in September…)
I didn’t really ask for anything for my birthday, so I just basically got money, but my boyfriend, Ryan, got me a sweatshirt, some super-cute boots for fall, a bunch more clothes that I picked out, and a cute D.I.Y. six-pack of Coke and Kit-Kats (both of which are my favorite). It was super cute and I’m so grateful for him!
2. Why did you start blogging? / How did you get started blogging?
I started blogging back in my first semester of college, and I honestly can’t remember why I did it. I think I always sort of wanted to, and I had an idea for a post, so I just did it. I was freelance writing first, so I suppose that’s what drew me into it. I have a background in web design and that sort of thing, so it all just kind of came naturally to me and it grew from there! If you want to know more about my first year of blogging, check out this recent post!
3. Are you going to keep blogging after college?
At this point, I don’t know why I would stop blogging, even if I only post like once a month, it’s still something that I enjoy doing. I’ve always tried to focus on the longevity of my blog, so instead of only posting about college, I try to switch it up a bit all the time.
I imagine that after college I’ll either transform into solely a writing blog or solely a lifestyle blog, but I don’t know. Maybe I’ll keep doing both! And I’ve seen a lot of people keep blogging about college after they’re done, so that’s an option, too. After all, I’ll only have barely turned 20 when I graduate.
4. What is your favorite mainstream Y/A book?
My favorite Young Adult book would probably have to be The Fault in Our Stars by John Green. You can make fun of it for being “mainstream,” but I think it’s absolutely genius and beautifully written. I cry every time (#SorryNotSorry).
5. Is that your natural hair?
No, my hair is naturally brown (the color it currently is on the top). Over the summer, I got it dyed ombre with blonde on the bottom, which turned gold, and I thought it was super pretty, so I did more blonde around Thanksgiving.
6. Where do you buy most of your clothes?
I get my clothes mostly at Charlotte Russe and TJ Maxx, but occasionally I’ll pick something up at one of the other stores in our mall like Hollister or American Eagle.
7. Do you really make money writing?
This was such a weird question to be asked—yes, I do make money writing, and quite a bit actually! You really can make money doing anything you love if you are willing to work yourself into the industry. It’s a challenge, and my income isn’t always steady, but to me, it’s totally worth it. Learn more about how to make money blogging in this Q&A video!
8. What is your middle name?
My middle name is Elizabeth!
9. What are you studying in college?
I am an English major with a minor in mass communication, which is like mass media. This is the closest I could get to a major in writing/journalism at my college—it’s a really small school, so I had to make it work for me!
10. How do you balance everything in your life?
People keep asking this! I know I seem like I have my life together, but I think I’m just as much of a mess as anyone else! If you want help with balance, though, check out this post I wrote all about it!
11. Who are some of your favorite bloggers & vloggers?
I’m a huge fan of all the #BloggingCollege girls, including Shannon Brown at Endless May, Kayla Rivoli, Jessica Slaughter, Alyssa DeBella at The Wise Willow, Isabelle at Truly Indulgent, Amelie at A Wanderer’s Adventures, and Lola at Macarons in the Morning. There are so, so many more though!
On the YouTube side, I follow Aspyn Ovard (and Parker, of course), Alexandrea Garza, Meredith Foster, and Jenna Moreci!
12. Do you use a PC or a Mac?
My university actually gives everyone a Macbook Pro included in tuition, so I’ve used that throughout the entire time I’ve been blogging, and it’s worked great!
13. How do you deal with people who don’t understand that blogging is a job?
I haven’t really encountered anyone who didn’t believe me, other than my boyfriend who thought it was silly to spend so much time on something that didn’t make money. But now that it’s lucrative, everyone sort of understands! It’s still not my full-time job or anything though; I definitely don’t do it for the money!
14. When did you know you wanted to be a writer?
I think I figured this out not long after I switched my major. I’m not sure when I officially decided, but I know that basically as soon as I left the music education major that I was going to have to come up with another job, and writing just made sense with my new major.
15. Are you ever going to publish a book?
Well, gosh, I hope so! The question is whether my nonfiction or fiction book will be out first.
16. When do you graduate undergrad?
I will finish my undergrad in the fall of 2017. Just two more semesters to go!
17. Were you always interested in English/writing/reading?
I think I was, but I just didn’t realize or accept it. I was always good at English, and good at writing, and I read a book every day or two in elementary and middle school, but I never even considered it as a lifestyle or future career choice. I just assumed I’d always want to do music, I guess!
18. Are you going to graduate school?
I’m not sure yet. If I do, I’d probably do a low-residency program in creative nonfiction, like they have at Queens University of Charlotte. I guess it depends on finances and if I think it will benefit me in the long run!
19. What is your favorite book of all time?
I know it’s kind of cliché, but my favorite book is Lord of the Flies by William Golding. If you haven’t read it, you totally should. It’s a post-WWII British YA novel about human nature and savagery. It’s definitely part of the canon, so check it off your reading list if you haven’t!
20. Does Ryan go to school with you?
This is a sort of unexciting way to end this blog post, but no, Ryan does not go to Shenandoah with me. He’s currently studying to be an EMT/Firefighter with the county we live in! We did go to elementary, middle, and high school together, though, if that counts.
I hope you guys feel like you know me a little better after this blog post! If you have more questions, feel free to post them in the comments below!
